Rushdown Radio Podcast 17: Online Only Gaming

Team Rushdown discuss one of the latest trends in video games: Online Only Gaming. Online Only or Always Online gaming refers to games that can only be played while connected to the games server. The classic example of this would be Massively Multiplayer Online games like Final Fantasy XIV, League of Legend, etc. However, certain game genres that used to be offline games like racing (Need For Speed) and fighting games (Rising Thunder) have jumped onto this model. Racing games especially have fundamentally eliminated local 1v1 racing. EA especially has many racing titles that require online connections to play someone. This also means that you cannot play the game without being logged in.  Team Rushdown details this trend and why they think this is detrimental to a many genres.
